Herb, a Mahwah resident, received a BA from Wesleyan University in 1959. Between 1960 and 1965 he was a freelance opera and oratorio singer, performing with the New York City Opera, New York Philharmonic, Bach Aria Group and Schola Cantorum. He also sang in several first concerts/recordings of Leonard Bernstein compositions. From 1965 through 1988 Herb was in various manufacturing, retail, and industrial real estate ventures. He then studied at the Wurzweiler School of Social Work where he received a MSW degree, and was a social worker for non-profits in New York and New Jersey until he retired in 2008. Herb is a violinist with RSO and was concertmaster for several years.

The Ridgewood Symphony Orchestra is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.
